Live coding, like other forms of programming, can require a lot of setup to get started. That’s a shame – many newcomers lose their enthusiasm as they battle through editor configuration and hardware quirks.

Klangmeister attacks this problem by hosting a live coding environment in the most ubiquitous programming environment in the world – the browser.

Klangmeister allows aspiring live coders to design synthesisers and composes melodies using Clojurescript, a dialect of Lisp. It uses the Web Audio API to synthesise sound right in the browser. Chrome works best, as Web Audio is an emerging standard and has inconsistent support across browsers (sorry IE users).

Other browser-based live coding environments include Gibber and Livecodelab.
