It seems like:
-technical / changelog oriented discussion is best suited for the pace and trace-ability of a mailing list. some important bread crumbs for decisions and development can go a long way in this format.
-community building and less formal chat seem more possible in a slack/gitter. gaining a familiarity of who lives where, is involved in what. who is approaching interaction from a musical or code perspective and a general lack of worry about derailing conversation are strong points of chats.
