There’s definitely some research going on with live coding at Georgia Tech — we’re continuing to develop out live coding functionality in EarSketch (
http://earsketch.gatech.edu) and to explore its potential in education. One of our current PhD students, Takahiko Tsuchiya, is also doing some great work in the live coding space with his DataToMusic API for JavaScript / web audio (watch for a public release soon).
