i am jonCates, Assistant Professor in the Film, Video & New Media
department (FVNM) _at_ The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)
where i develop the curriculum for + teach courses in the New Media
path of study. my art practice involves individual + collaborative
projects within curatorial, organizational + systems approaches to
developing New Media, Digital Art, codework, etc...
the collaborative criticalartware project that i am a founder +
core.developer of is an [application/platform/concern] compiled to
address hyperthreaded hystories of [connections/ruptures/
dislocations] between early moments of {conceptual|code}-based art
forms such as artware + Video Art. By drawing [parallels/paths]
between the [concepts/discourses] of these early moments, we
critically question + [re]connect the current context to its rightful
