Hi Alex.

what this has to do with artists is that artist do
need to make some kind of income, and I think it is
preferably that this money is earned from doing their
work, rather than have to go out and do work they
perhaps don't want to do. So make money from doing
festivals, exhibitions, selling their work, doing
talks. Or writing software and trying to sell it. Like
how "fine artists" sell their work.
I would rather it was the case that artists could do
their stuff and not have to worry about income. But
this is not the case... and is likely to get worse.

I have found over the last 10 years that people expect
more and more that experimental software (whether it
is classed as artistic or not) should be free. Maybe
this is my experience. And others in the free software
movement I have spoken to about have agreed that free
software has meant people think s/w should be free.
But they don't see it as a problem. Maybe it isn't.

I don't know if there is a shareware s/w art culture.
But maybe this is just part of s/w art culture in
which the artists sell their work. Which I think is
small.

am I making any sense.,,
probably not
