Doctoral Studentships Competition
Music Department, Durham University

The Music Department of Durham University invites high-calibre candidates to apply to its funded research programmes. We particularly welcome proposals relating to the areas of specialism detailed below.
Musicology: music of the Renaissance, music from 1750 to the present. Areas of particular expertise include Elizabethan and Jacobean sacred music; Italian Renaissance vocal music; nineteenth-century instrumental music; the music of Bruckner and Brahms; British and Irish music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; Russian/Soviet music; music and politics/totalitarianism; musical modernism; music and psychoanalysis.
Music analysis: Formenlehre; tonal theory; formal issues pertaining to the symphony and the concerto; schema theory and other historical approaches to analysis.
Acoustic Composition: proposals from a broad range of aesthetic orientations are welcome. Specialist research topics include orchestration, extended techniques, advanced notational practices (standard staff and graphic), use of borrowed materials, experiential structural forms, music theatre, music for dance, and music for film. Postgraduate students can avail of a range of performance opportunities, including working with the Ives Ensemble and Ensemble 7Bridges, Durham University's ensemble in residence.
Electronic music: new computer music, studio composition, live performance with electronics, algorithmic composition, artificial intelligence and music, computational musicology, history and analysis of electronic music. Students have access to excellent studio facilities.
Music Theology: specialisms include study of the literature of Music Theology from the Church Fathers to the present; composers and their music in relation to Theology; and church liturgies and practice.
Ethnomusicology: Indian and Korean musical traditions; analysis (including rhythmic analysis and performance analysis); gesture, embodiment and interaction; diaspora and globalisation; semiotics; ritual, shamanism and healing, and ethnomusicological history, theory, and method. Postgraduate students have access to excellent facilities and training in audiovisual documentation and analysis.
Music psychology: empirical research of musical behaviours; music and emotion; music and movement; music preferences; uses of music in everyday life; music cognition. Postgraduate students have a unique opportunity to work in a truly interdisciplinary environment facilitating collaborations with researchers in ethnomusicology, music technology, psychology, and medical humanities.
