Hello,

I am looking for participants for a study on web based live coding. The study takes the form of short live coding session using a new web based live coding language called Lich.js, followed by a questionnaire. Further details of the motivation and methodology for the study are enclosed below. If you wish to participate, simply use the web browser Chrome to go to www.chadmckinneyaudio.com/lich.

What is the purpose of the study?

This is a study into collaborative live coding. Participants will use a web based live coding language and fill out a questionnaire afterwards.

Why have I been invited to participate?

You have been asked to participate because you have some experience with music or programming.

Do I have to take part?

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason. Returning the completed questionnaire implies consent to to the following terms:


You agree to take part in the Evaluation of Browser Based Collaborative Live Coding research project. You have read and understood the Information Sheet, which you may keep for your records. You understand that agreeing to take part means that you are willing to:

        Participate in an evaluation of Lich.js.

        Complete a questionnaire regarding your experience using Lich.js.

        Have anonymized data arising from the study used in published research

What will happen to me if I take part?

You will be asked to using the web based live coding language Lich.js and to fill out a questionnaire when you are done.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?

The questionnaires will only pertain to live coding and music and will not ask sensitive questions regarding personal information, religion, politics, or any other topic.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

Participating in this research study will further understanding of collaboration in live coding.

Will what I say in this study be kept confidential?

All information collected from you will be kept strictly confidential. The questionnaires and interview transcripts will use codes to anonymize participants' names and any information from the interviews that could be used to identify the participants will be anonymized.

What should I do if I want to take part?

What will happen to the results of the research study?

The results of the research study may be used in a research paper on the topic as well as in Chad McKinney's PhD dissertation for the University of Sussex. A preprint of any research paper and the thesis will be made available to the public in due course, allowing participants to read the results and analysis of the study.

Who is organising and funding the research?

We are conducting this research as a student (Chad McKinney) and member of staff (Nick Collins) at the University of Sussex in the Department of Informatics. The research is not directly funded, however Chad McKinney's PhD study and research is funded through the University of Sussex.

Who has reviewed the study?
