I always thought a laptop stand, where the laptop is mounted to a free
swinging bar with a counterweight on the bottom would be great to rock out.

I think standing/sitting is a choice of presentation and how you want your
performance to be perceived. When playing lush ambient music in an art
gallery (like Musique d'ameublement) sitting in a corner with your computer
on your lap might not be the worst thing. The bigger the stage gets sitting
looks more and more ridiculous. If you want people to move to your music
you should be able to move too, otherwise people might not get it that
they're invited to move. Playing with the computer on your lap is like "I
don't care if I have a desk or not, I just play, I don't need one." which
can give the performance a more casual look. Sitting on the floor just
makes it even more casual.

Also: Don't buy cheap laptop stands. Mandelbrots did it, wasn't worth it.
Many fingers were hurt.
