Just as a note: this is not generally correct if you refer to rock
and cave art - there were always symbolic forms as well. Also we do
not know how oral language developed - and ritual as well. Ascii is
derived from the sound of spoken word, just because it uses sight
does not make it iconic, it is still symbolic.

But arguments from genesis is probably not such a good idea anyway -
so I agree with you that we have always several media at the same
time.
