Hi all,
Would people be interested if I put in proposals for TOPLAP for two
UK events? The first is Futuresonic 2006 in Manchester. The second
possibility is the one below in Liverpool, though this looks more academic.

cheers

BETA: Composition, Sound, Technology and beyond
Friday 30th September - Sunday 2nd October 2005

Over the past 10 years FACT has specialised in working with a wide
variety of artists, exhibitors and technologists to explore the
creative potential of new media tools.

We are now aiming to bring together practitioners, composers, performers,
researchers and writers academic or otherwise working with sound,
composition, improvisation, DSP, information, net, open source, the open
compositioin and generative based technology for a 3 day conference
programme looking at the areas where these fields and creative processes
overlap.

Building on the success of previous projects working with
artists from the visual arts, media and dance, this project will
support an open dialogue between all of the creative partners.

It will support and develop an understanding of some of the
methods, processes and tools employed in these areas in order that we may
be able to seed new ways of working.

The conference will be facilitated by FACT, but will feature guest
presentations, talks, lectures, performances, actions and workshops by
specialists within these fields as guest speakers. Similarly delegates
will be invited from across the fields of sound, composition and technology.

There will be a critical discourse as a background and primer to the
conference in the form of discussion panels at the start and end of the
programme.

Interest and format

Proposals for any contributions, presentations, lectures or interest in the
conference should be sent to dalzielross_at_mac.com.

The project also welcomes any input that strays from more traditional
lecture formats; virtual lectures & appearances, cryptic messages and
emailed sets of instructions for delegates, objects or text sent in the
post, a radio programme, cd's to be listened to on headphones, overhead
projector performances, drawings, compositions, photographs, mp3s, software
demos, file sharing, website bookmarks.

Some Primers and questions

The aims of the conference are to bring together strands of thinking and
practice that could help develop future ways of working with technology,
sound and composition.

What are the models for music composition, performance and creativity when
new technology is involved? What are open compositions and how do they
relate to technology? Do we need computers to make advanced, open creative
composition, sound and music? What is generative and information based
composition and how does advanced composition or contemporary music use
technology? To what extent does new technology continue to influence/
develop musical theory and creativity?
How is contemporary composition and sound art feeding back into
technological development? How is science influencing composition?
