Re: [livecode] First live coding performance? Tom DeFanti, 1976, with video / paper

This is a good question!.... With analog video synths generally the patch
was completely built before performing (or more commonly recording.) Though
I also had the experience of instructors patching live in class demos,
probably most people would have felt awkward doing so on stage.
They wouldn't be able to test the patch, and it would probably look like
they didn't finish their setup before the doors opened! Live video synth
performances were a rare thing, though. Not sure if audio synth performers
did it; there were a lot more analog synth performers and performances in
the audio realm, so this is the real question.

It's hard to imagine a musician building an analog synth patch entirely
from scratch on stage though, except in the context of avant-garde music.
*Pictures Cage-like score for analog synth patch: "Roll a dice, then patch
to the inlet on the second module that matches the number on the dice...*
This case assumes that in order for something to be live coding it should
be more or less built from scratch in performance, not just an edit of
pre-built code (be it code, physical patch cords, or Max/PD patch cords.)

Stream of consciously yours,
