These are good points, but its certainly possible to practice improvisation
intensely without compromising specific performances- jazz musicians
sometimes lock themselves away for 6 months practising their chops 14 hours
a day... So the last statement is the chief point. What are the best
practice tactics? Anyone want to list some favourite practice exercises for
different aspects, i.e. general technique practice versus explorations
intended to increase the creative scope?

(as a personal confession I'll happily admit that the ICMC live coding bout
versus Ge wasn't very good, and I've always been disappointed in myself. I
think one aspect of that sense of failure for me is that I wasn't able to
adapt to the audience enough when the battle commenced - I had a plan to do
a complex from scratch Babylonian square root procedure system which wasn't
so compatible with the occasion in the end. Rather, a whole host of
different techniques and solutions should be on hand- and this is what six
months of intensive practice could seek to develop).
