-- Dear Douglas - I'm curious to know how (and if) your concept of "abstract machines" corresponds with my own. I started out by imagining that a hurricane could be seen as a thermodynamical motor, but that wouldn't really make it an "abstract machine" in the Delezean sense. Then I found a link with ancient Vedic-Hindu yantras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yantras) which are basically fractal/symmetry structures that one is supposed to stare at (a form of meditation). I understand that converting gaming modules into Universal Turing Machines (or simple sequencers, for that matter) is the next big wave in performance art, but you see - there are still elements here which are not abstract. So for me the abstract machine should be a machine that the performer "imagines' in front of him, and then uses manipulations and livecoding of that imaginary machine to create an auditory experience.
