of course in any argument we have to take care not to confuse correlation
with causality (http://www.stat.tamu.edu/stat30x/notes/node42.html) but it
seems others have hit on that already.

but just wanted to mention re:

also, don't forget, PD grew out of Max/MSP, which is not open source and
is now fully commercial/proprietary/expensive. (though it had an academic
history, afaik it never was open source.) but commercial or not, still it
does not flatter the user. flattery doesn't bother me so much anyway -
flattering features can be ignored in either case, and all software
imposes restrictions whether overt like "wizards" or less obvious (e.g.,
the patch model presents its own restrictions, although it certainly
facilitates some things. where do we draw the line between "facilitating"
and "taking over?"

hmm, patch model, that's based on hardware synths, they too were an
amalgam of opening possibilites up and closing them down.

anyway, i think the distinction may be closer to "software written by an
individual" or "software written by an 'artist'" vs. "software written by
a company with a focus on mass commercialization... rather than open vs.
proprietary. this might be paul w's point.

i have no idea about bidule, but it still doesn't bother me even if it
does, as long as it also has the functionality to do things on one's own.
in fact, it might be helpful to give newbies a test drive with training
wheels on so they can have some idea how the thing works and whether they
want to delve into it for real. sure, 10,000 people will make recordings
with the same preset, but that'll be its own punishment; that's been going
on at least since the "macpaint aesthetic."

btw, not everyone seems to agree that building from sinewaves is all that
original:

search on "Theremin"

where does it all end? sinewaves for thought....
