We could try to get some money as TOPLAP for the PRS for a series of UK performances:

We could perhaps extend the remit to all people writing software to generate music, although if it's TOPLAP, live coding should be involved in most performances.

MYK> I think that reduces the focus of TOPLAP as a 'performance group'. (PRSF speak)

We could ask for £3000 for bi-monthly performances. With a budget of £500 per event we could try to pay people £100 each. We could scale this down if we get less. We could ask for more than £3000 if we've got big ideas...

MYK> I expect that if we write a detailed budget, that'll be a good thing to add, but that the PRSF will not give us the whole lot.

Could be nice to emphasise support for collaboration between live coders and other kinds of musicians.

MYK> Not sure if PRSF are so bothered about that. I think they want to support interesting live shows.

What we can spend it on

Fees for musicians, travel and accommodation costs, venue hire/equipment hire/music hire, marketing and promotion costs and commission fees.

Not recordings/demos, equipment purchase, performance outside the UK or music creators from outside the UK.

Needed for Application

We'd need to document all the TOPLAP performances, festivals and workshops over the last year or two. I guess we can document overseas performances pointing out that we'd like to build up support for UK livecoding events with help from the money.

We'd need a bank account especially for TOPLAP. I (alex) have a business account I could dedicate to this although I'd much rather someone else did it!

We'd need a programme of events, including venues, dates etc

Recordings of past performances

A detailed budget showing the shortfall that we want the PRS to fill.

From the application form:

• Aims and objectives of your performance group you - describe the group and its members. You should also give a short history of the group, including any major successes your music - describe the music that you play. For groups playing music by music creators who are not members of the group, please describe how you choose your programmes
• activity - a broad description of your plans for the coming year. This is your chance to give us an overview of what you are planning, describe any specific projects and to tell us what you hope to achieve through your activity
• your audience - how many people do you typically play to live?
• promotion - give details of how you promote your work in relation to
  • attracting new and sustaining existing audiences
  • attracting performance opportunities from promoters.

Why do it

To make ourselves do things we wouldn't get around to doing otherwise (see past plans for tours etc), get more people involved in bigger livecoding things, and not expose ourselves to too much risk about money.

Why not do it

Do we want a 'supported by the PRS foundation' logo on everything? Might we rely upon the money and be in a worse place when it runs out?

Planetarium idea

I've (MYK) been in touch with Greenwich observatory, who are planning events to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo looking through a telescope. I expect lots of other public planetariums are planning similar things. We need a list of planetariums + contacts. It will be important for them for events to have something to do with astronomy. So - if we want to do the planetarium thing, we'll need to do some sort of astronomically themed music. Ideas?

• live coding astronomical data sonification
  • music of the spheres! would be nice to use live feeds in some way, or transmit music out in code form like the arecibo transmission. (yaxu)
• live coding science fiction sound tracks
