There is no requirement for building your own OS, so why do you have to build
your own hardware, in your analogy?

Within the Linux community there is pressure put on hardware manufacturers to
at least open up their firmware and drivers...
and indeed hardware manufacturers who are totally closed don't get their stuff
bought by Linux people...

freedom and openness are not interesting questions to you?
The question how closed source-ness hinders development of technology and
science as a whole, in the background of a society where science and
technology are highly specialised themselves in the sense that you need years
of training to even begin to understand the inner workings of these
technologies, even more hindered by closedness... that does raise questions
about democracy in a technocratic world...
