Thanks for the suggestion!

We looked into it, Alex even tried to run it on LURK at some point, but
there are several issues:

- like groupserver, discourse business model relies on the users paying
for hosting the platform on their server. You can get the software and
run it elsewhere but support wise, you're not treated the same
obviously, and when you get stuck somewhere, you might get not always
help. On the plus side, it is much more popular than GS and I don't
think it will disappear anytime soon, and generally the docs seem much
much better and the upgrade path more sane.

- it takes more resources than our current server can handle, it is
quite heavy to say the least. It makes it also a bit scary to
admin/maintain, because like GS, it feels like we're just running a big
black box on the server despite it being free/open source software,
given the fact that this is a very large software environment.

- On the client side it is also very heavy, even on a recent machine,
discourse never feels super snappy, it relies on js. Similarly even
though they provide a mobile friendly interface, it's still a lot of
stuff for phone browsers to handle so it is a bit sluggish. I'm sure it
looks fine on mid/high-end devices, laptop and phones, bought in the
past 2-3 years, but anything older will not provide a nice experience.

Then there is a more personal aspect, I am not super keen on the
likification, for a better word, of forums/lists, where suddenly any
post becomes a popularity context, which is the kind of system discourse
provides by introducing social media/network features in its own UI.

Discourse was also selected as a possible candidate because it maintains
(not tried though so I do not know to what extend this is true)
discussion across web and email like GS. But all that said, we could
also think more radically and go back to strict classic email only
lists, and look for something else to power web based discusions and/or
chats? Something that would not compete with email discussion, but bring
something very specific to web discussions? If I look at the livecode
group, out of 426 members, only 28 are web only, in the Algorave group,
32 out of 332 members, on Eightycolumn, 6 out of 269 members.
Of course a more useful stat would be how many members use the web
interface to read/post but I am not sure we can easily find out...
